Flex Your Spiritual Muscles!
One of my favorite sections of scripture is from the very beginning of the book of James.
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” -James 1:2-4
I think it could be said of me that when I face trials, I am laser focused on God. Those are the times when I really FEEL the need for God’s presence, his guidance, his wisdom. But what about when I’m not facing a trial? Am I still laser focused on God? Less often than I’d like to admit. Can you relate with that? When things seem to be going well, sometimes we lose our focus on God. When we face trials, we turn to Him.
That’s why fasting is such a great spiritual EXERCISE. In essence, fasting is a conscious decision to make myself face a trial. It may be a small trial, like not looking at facebook, or missing a meal, but still, it’s enough of a reminder to me to turn my focus on God. In doing so, we train our hearts and minds to focus on God ALL THE TIME. I think that’s part of the completeness that James is talking about in this scripture. That we might become “steadfast” or faithful back to God because He is so faithful to us. May this time of prayer and fasting help you flex your spiritual muscles to become a more mature, more complete follower of Christ!
