In-the-Know Monthly – September 2022

I had no clue just how transformative a trip to Israel could be. This past July when I went to the Holy Land, I was excited to walk where Jesus walked and see the land that brought salvation to the world. But I just could not have guessed how powerful the event would be in my faith walk with Jesus. The closest thing I could compare it to was when I first came to Christ. Those early days of following Jesus for me were met with a complete awestruck wonder over the fact…

Our last missionary, David Wissel, who is planting a church in Japan, said something during his sermon that I think a lot of people may not have understood – even though it was a passing comment.  He talked about how a lot of people are “deconstructing”.  This is a concept pastors talk about, but isn’t something that is probably in the mainstream of Christianity unless…

The kick-off to summer connection was a blast! We had over 20 families meet up and hang out at the lake for our first Backyard Hangouts. The night was super laid back with kayaking, water gun fights, and of course s’mores! Backyard Hangouts are for ANYONE at Harmony who wants to meet other families…

Jesus was a man of action. He didn’t just teach; He also did the things He was teaching. As Christians, Jesus calls all of us to not only be listeners but to be doers. This isn’t even debatable. Throughout the teachings of the New Testament Jesus constantly challenges His followers to not simply hear…

Advancing the Kingdom by Living for God and Loving People

I have recently chatted with several people who have shared with me just how much they love Harmony, and honestly, I have to tell you, I haven’t been surprised when they tell me why.  As much as I’d love to tell you that what stuck out them was the preaching, I can’t do that.  It wasn’t even the worship or kids ministry – although they all loved those things.  What actually made them want to “stick” to Harmony was…  [drum roll please!]

What’s in a name?
My dad said he and my mom named me “Kent Alexander Wagner” because he had always worked at radio stations and had dreamed of being a big-time DJ.  He thought, “Kent Alexander” had a really nice ring to it for a DJ’s name.  When I was in high school, I actually DJ’s for a while, I was terrible at it – talking to a microph….

Recently I’ve had several people ask me about baptism and if they need to be baptized. This is a great question, and not something you want to enter into lightly.  So, what do I share with people who are interested in baptism?  Most of the time I encourage them to read what the scripture says about baptism and make up their own minds about what they should do in their pursuit of Jesus. I tell them this because Baptism is such a personal decision, a person needs to have decided in their heart that they are ready to follow Jesus in a forever kind of way.  Maybe you’re thinking, “but Kent, I don’t even know where I would start in the bible to find out more about bapt….

I love in movies when there is that one defining moment that changes everything. The moment uncle Ben dies and tells Spiderman “with great power comes great responsibility,” or in Back to the Future when Doc is telling Marty about how the time-traveling Delorean works and he tells him the story of inventing the flux…

When Pastors meet other Pastors, there is a weird exchange that goes on.  They inevitably end up talking about “how their church is doing” and what they are doing to “grow” their church.  It’s not a bad thing, and I’m certainly interested in seeing the local church continue to grow and expand.  But I have to tell you, I’m not like other Pastors – my goal…
