Discussion Guide: Stop Hiding, Step Into Strength

    Key Scripture

    Genesis 3:1-10

"But the Lord God called to the man, 'Where are you?'" (Genesis 3:9)

    Icebreaker

    1. Who was a man (father, grandfather, coach, teacher, pastor, friend) who positively influenced your life? What made his influence significant?
    2. When you hear the phrase "real man", what qualities come to mind?

    Opening Reflection

The sermon challenged men to consider a simple but powerful question:

What kind of man do you want to be?

The message argued that biblical manhood is not about power, dominance, or control. Rather, it is about using strength for the good of others and accepting responsibility instead of hiding from it.

A godly man is strong—but he uses his strength to serve, protect, lead, and bless others.

    Read Together

    Genesis 3:1-10

As you read, pay special attention to Adam's role in the story.

    Discussion Questions

    Understanding the Passage

    1. What stands out to you most in this familiar story?

Why do you think God specifically calls out to Adam with the question, "Where are you?"

    2. The sermon suggested that Eve's sin was stepping into a place she shouldn't have been, while Adam's sin was hiding and abdicating responsibility.

What evidence do you see in the passage that Adam failed to lead spiritually?

How does Adam's response after the fall reveal his heart?

    3. Why do you think hiding is still such a common temptation for men today?

What are some modern ways men "hide"?

    • Work
    • Entertainment
    • Sports
    • Video games
    • Busyness
    • Isolation
    • Avoiding difficult conversations

Which of these is most tempting for you?

    Biblical Leadership

    Read Ephesians 5:25

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

    4. How does this verse redefine leadership?

How is Christ's example different from the world's view of authority?

    5. The sermon said:

"The authority given to men is meant to be a reflection of the heart of God."

What does healthy spiritual leadership look like in a husband, father, grandfather, mentor, or friend?

What does unhealthy leadership look like?

    6. The sermon defined a godly man this way:

"A godly man is someone who is strong, but uses his strength for the good of others."

What kinds of strength has God given you?

How could those strengths be used more intentionally to bless others?

    Personal Application

    7. Which statement challenged you the most?

    • My presence matters.
    • My decisiveness matters.
    • My energy matters.
    • My love matters.
    • The men I surround myself with matter.

    Why?

    8. The sermon challenged men to make sure their families know Jesus.

What are practical ways a man can lead spiritually without becoming controlling or legalistic?

    Examples:

    • Praying with family
    • Reading Scripture together
    • Modeling repentance
    • Serving others
    • Worshiping openly
    • Prioritizing church involvement

Which of these comes naturally to you? Which is hardest?

    9. Who are the godly men currently influencing your life?

If you don't have those relationships, what is one step you can take this month to build them?

    10. Where is God asking you to stop hiding?

    Consider:

    • Marriage
    • Parenting
    • Spiritual growth
    • Purity
    • Friendships
    • Church involvement
    • Leadership opportunities
    • Difficult conversations

What would stepping forward look like?

    Action Step

This week, identify one area where you've been tempted to withdraw, avoid responsibility, or remain passive.

Write down one concrete action you will take to step into God's calling instead.

    My Action Step:

    Prayer

    Father,

Thank You for calling us out of hiding and into purpose. Forgive us for the times we have avoided responsibility, remained passive, or failed to use our strength for the good of others. Help us become men who reflect Jesus—men who love sacrificially, lead humbly, and serve faithfully.

Give us courage to step into the battles You have called us to fight. Help us influence our families, our church, and our community for Your Kingdom. Surround us with godly men who will encourage and challenge us to grow.

May our strength always be used for the good of others and for Your glory.

    In Jesus' name,

    Amen.
