    Summary

In this sermon, Doug explores Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 for the church to experience not just the indwelling of Christ in their hearts, but the full resurrection power of Jesus flowing through every part of their lives. He explains that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, the power that overcame the crushing weight of all human sin, guilt, and shame, is available to every believer. The challenge is that many Christians have Jesus in their hearts but are not experiencing His power in their daily lives because walls of lies, built up over years of believing what others or the enemy have said about them, are blocking that flow. Using the story of Margaret and the one-room schoolhouse, Doug illustrates how deeply embedded lies can shape a person's identity and cause real physical, emotional, and relational damage. The answer is not found in medication or therapy alone, but in the living and active Word of God, which is sharp enough to penetrate those walls and replace lies with truth. Doug calls believers to take every thought captive, to stay in the Word daily, and to open the door of their hearts so that Christ, who is already inside, can move freely through their entire lives.

    Intro Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You today as a group of people who want to know You more deeply. We ask that You open our hearts and minds as we discuss Your Word together. Remove any distractions, any pride, or any walls that might keep us from hearing what You want to say to us today. Let Your truth be the loudest voice in the room, and give us the courage to be honest with one another and with You. We invite Your Spirit to move freely among us. In Jesus' name, amen.

    Ice Breaker

What is one thing someone said about you when you were young, positive or negative, that has stuck with you all these years?

    Key Verses

    • Ephesians 3:16-17
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:23
    • Hebrews 4:12
    • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
    • Revelation 3:20

    Questions

    • Doug described the human person as having a Spirit, soul, and body. How does understanding this three-part design change the way you think about your spiritual health and your overall well-being?
    • Paul prays that believers would experience resurrection power in their daily lives, not just in their hearts. On a practical level, what do you think it looks like to experience that kind of power in an ordinary week?
    • Doug said that guilt and shame can become so heavy that they cause real physical and emotional problems. Have you ever seen or experienced a situation where unresolved spiritual issues showed up as physical or emotional symptoms?
    • Satan is described as the Father of lies who builds strongholds in our lives by getting us to believe things that are not true. What kinds of lies do you think are most common among Christians today, and where do those lies tend to come from?
    • Doug used the story of Margaret to show how deeply words spoken over us can shape our identity for decades. How do you think the church can do a better job of speaking truth over people, especially those who have been wounded by words in their past?
    • Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God is living and active and can penetrate even to the deepest parts of who we are. Can you share a time when a specific Bible verse or passage broke through something in your life in a powerful way?
    • Doug warned that after a spiritual breakthrough, many people fail to deal with the remaining lies, and those lies regroup and build an even stronger wall. What habits or practices do you think help a person guard against that happening?
    • Doug reframed Revelation 3:20 as Jesus speaking to Christians, saying not 'let me in' but 'let me out.' What does it mean to you personally to let Jesus move freely from your heart into the rest of your life, and what might be standing in the way?

    Life Application

This week, set aside time each day to read a passage of Scripture and ask God to show you one lie you have been believing about yourself or your circumstances. Write it down, then find a verse that speaks the truth over that lie. Pray through that truth out loud, and ask God to help you take that thought captive and replace it with what He says. By the end of the week, you will have a small but real list of lies replaced by truth, and you will have begun the daily practice of letting the Word of God do its penetrating work in your life.

    Key Takeaways

    • The resurrection power of Jesus is not just meant to live in a believer's heart. It is meant to flow through every part of life, including the soul and the body.
    • Guilt, shame, and the lies we believe can build spiritual strongholds that block the Holy Spirit from operating freely in our lives, and those blockages can produce real emotional and physical consequences.
    • The Word of God is the only thing sharp enough to break through the walls built by lies, and daily engagement with Scripture is essential for maintaining spiritual freedom.
    • After a spiritual breakthrough, believers must actively take every thought captive and replace lies with truth, or those lies will regroup and build an even stronger barrier.
    • Jesus is already inside the heart of every believer. The invitation of Revelation 3:20 to the church is not to let Him in, but to let Him out by choosing to believe His truth over the world's lies.

    Ending Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the time we have spent together today wrestling with Your Word and with the things You want to do in our lives. We confess that we have sometimes believed lies more readily than we have believed Your truth, and we ask for Your forgiveness and Your help. We invite You to move freely, not just in our hearts, but through every part of who we are. Take the walls we have built, the shame we have carried, and the lies we have rehearsed, and replace them with the truth of who You say we are. You say we are chosen, loved, forgiven, and Yours. Help us to believe that this week and every week. Carry us forward in the power of Your resurrection, and let that power be visible in our lives to everyone around us. In Your name we pray, amen.
