Summary
This sermon opens a short series on spiritual warfare by challenging common misconceptions Christians hold about the devil and His schemes. Kent argues that most believers either claim to believe in spiritual warfare but live as though it is not real, or they dismiss it entirely as "hocus pocus." Either way, the practical result is the same: people walk through life unaware of an active spiritual enemy, like golfers hitting balls through a minefield while explosions go off around them. Using Ephesians 6 and 1 John 3:8 as anchors, Kent makes the case that Jesus Himself took the existence of Satan seriously, and that the work of the cross was the greatest act of spiritual warfare in history. The sermon then walks through several real military tactics (such as attrition, deception, divide and conquer, and siege) to help the congregation identify how the enemy operates in everyday life, from family conflict and persistent sin habits to isolation from Christian community. The goal is to move people from passive belief to active, informed engagement in the spiritual battle around them.
Intro Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You today as a group of people who want to be honest with You and with each other. We ask that You open our eyes to the things we may have dismissed or ignored when it comes to the spiritual reality around us. Remove any pride or skepticism that would keep us from receiving what You have for us today. Holy Spirit, lead our conversation, soften our hearts, and help each of us leave this time with something real and practical that we can carry into our week. We trust You to do what only You can do. In Jesus' name, amen.
Ice Breaker
What is one "fact" you believed for a long time that turned out to be completely wrong, and how did you find out the truth?
Key Verses
- 1 John 3:8
- Ephesians 6:11-17
- 2 Corinthians 2:11
Questions
- Kent described two common categories Christians fall into regarding spiritual warfare: those who claim to believe in it but do not act like it, and those who quietly think it is all "hocus pocus." Which category do you most identify with, and why?
- The sermon states that the work of Jesus on the cross was the greatest act of spiritual warfare in history, based on 1 John 3:8. How does thinking about the cross in that way change how you understand what Jesus did for you?
- Kent used the image of golfers playing through a minefield to describe Christians who are unaware of the spiritual battle around them. Where in your own life do you think you might be "playing golf in a minefield" right now?
- Paul writes in Ephesians 6 that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. How does that truth change the way you approach conflict with a spouse, a coworker, or a family member?
- The sermon drew a distinction between condemnation and conviction. Can you describe a time when you experienced one or the other, and how did it affect the choices you made afterward?
- Kent listed several tactics the enemy uses, including attrition, deception, divide and conquer, and siege (cutting off supplies). Which of these tactics do you think has been most active in your life or family, and what did it look like?
- The sermon mentioned that not every thought that enters your mind is your own thought, and that Scripture calls us to "take captive every thought." How does that idea challenge or change the way you talk to yourself on a daily basis?
- Kent emphasized the importance of Christian community as a spiritual supply line, warning that isolation weakens believers over time. What is one practical step you could take this week to strengthen your connection to other believers?
Life Application
This week, read Ephesians 6:10-18 every single day. As you read each piece of the armor of God, do not just read it as information. Pray it. Ask God what it means for your specific life to put on the helmet of salvation, to hold up the shield of faith, or to stand firm with the belt of truth. Then identify one area of your life where you have been passive, whether it is a persistent sin, a strained relationship, or a negative thought pattern you have accepted as just "who you are." Write it down, bring it before God, and choose to stand against it in prayer rather than simply endure it.
Key Takeaways
- Jesus Himself took the existence of Satan seriously, and the cross was the ultimate act of spiritual warfare against the devil's work.
- Believing in spiritual warfare without acting on that belief leads to the same practical outcome as not believing in it at all.
- The enemy uses real, identifiable tactics such as attrition, deception, concentration of force, divide and conquer, and siege to wear down individuals, families, and churches.
- Not every negative thought or destructive pattern in your life originated with you. The enemy plants lies, and agreeing with them gives him ongoing access.
- Christian community is a spiritual supply line. Isolation from the body of Christ weakens your ability to stand against the enemy's schemes.
Ending Prayer
Lord, we thank You for this time together and for the truth of Your Word that cuts through the fog of confusion and deception. We confess that we have not always taken the spiritual battle seriously, and we ask for Your forgiveness and Your grace to do better. Right now, we choose to put on the full armor You have provided. We ask You to open our eyes to the schemes of the enemy that have been at work in our lives, our families, and our relationships. Give us the courage to stand firm, to speak truth against lies, and to stay connected to one another and to You. We declare that we are not alone in this fight, and that the One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. Thank You, Jesus, for destroying the devil's work on the cross. We walk in that victory today. In Your name we pray, amen.
