Discussion Guide
Pastor Kent explores the concept of finding margin in life's madness, using the metaphor of a dog's tail wagging the dog to illustrate how we often lose control of our lives. He identifies that when we lack margin (extra space in our lives), we stop doing things we love, prioritize pressing matters over people, make decisions from desperation rather than wisdom, and become more vulnerable to temptation. The root issue is a misaligned identity - not knowing who we are and whose we are in Christ. Drawing from C.S. Lewis's "The Silver Chair," Kent explains how many Christians live under a delusion about their true identity, similar to the prince who forgot he was royalty. The solution is understanding our biblical identity as children of God, light of the world, and joint heirs with Christ, rather than defining ourselves by our roles or failures.
Intro Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You this morning acknowledging that our lives often feel chaotic and overwhelming. We confess that we sometimes lose sight of who You've called us to be and whose we are. As we gather together in this small group, we ask that You would open our hearts and minds to what You want to teach us today. Help us to be honest with one another and with ourselves about the areas where we're being 'wagged by the tail' instead of living from our true identity in You. Give us wisdom and courage to apply Your truth to our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Ice Breaker
What's one hobby or activity that you absolutely love to do, but haven't had time for lately because life has been too busy?
Key Verses
- Acts 20:24 King James Version (KJV)
- Matthew 5:13 King James Version (KJV)
- Matthew 5:14 King James Version (KJV)
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 King James Version (KJV)
- 1 John 3:1 King James Version (KJV)
Questions
- Kent mentioned several signs of having little margin in life (stopping activities you love, prioritizing pressing things over people, making desperate decisions, etc.). Which of these resonates most with your current season of life?
- What do you think is driving the 'madness' or busyness in your life right now? Is it fear of missing out, trying to prove something, or something else entirely?
- When someone asks 'Who are you?', how do you typically respond? Do you define yourself by what you do or by who God says you are?
- Looking at the list of biblical identities (salt of the earth, light of the world, child of God, etc.), which one is hardest for you to believe about yourself and why?
- Kent shared about feeling like a fake sometimes, even as a pastor. How does it encourage you to know that spiritual leaders also struggle with identity and authenticity?
- What voices from your past or present are you listening to that contradict what God says about you? How can you begin to silence those voices?
- Paul said 'I consider my life worth nothing to me' in Acts 20:24. What would it look like practically for you to live with that same perspective about your purpose?
- If you truly believed and lived from your identity as a beloved child of God, how would your daily priorities and decisions change?
Life Application
This week, choose one area where you feel 'wagged by the tail' and intentionally create some margin by saying no to something good that isn't leading to something great. Additionally, write down three biblical truths about your identity in Christ and read them aloud each morning, asking God to help you live from that truth rather than from the world's definitions of who you are.
Key Takeaways
- When we lack margin in life, we stop doing things we love, prioritize urgent matters over people, and make decisions from desperation rather than wisdom
- Misaligned identity leads to misaligned living - if we don't know who we are and whose we are, we'll live chaotically
- Many Christians live under a delusion about their identity, like the prince in C.S. Lewis's story who forgot he was royalty
- God sees us as children of God, light of the world, salt of the earth, and joint heirs with Christ - not as failures or defined by our roles
- Finding our purpose and living from our true identity in Christ allows us to say no to good things that don't lead to great things, creating the margin we need
Ending Prayer
Father God, thank You for reminding us today of who we truly are in You. We confess that we often live from old identities and allow the chaos of this world to define us rather than Your truth. Help us this week to create margin in our lives by saying no to things that don't align with Your purposes for us. Give us the courage to live as the children of God that You've declared us to be - as light in this dark world, as salt that brings flavor and preservation. When we're tempted to find our worth in what we do or what others think of us, remind us that we are Yours, chosen and beloved. Help us to run to You as our Father when life feels overwhelming. Transform our hearts and minds to align with Your truth about who we are. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
